Music Overview

Welcome to the Music Department at Walderslade Girls’ School! We are a busy department committed to delivering an outstanding music experience for all students. We are proud to have such exceptionally talented musicians in our school and proactively give students opportunity to develop their abilities as soon as they arrive in Year 7.

Years 7 and 8

In Years 7 and 8 students are offered a broad curriculum which focuses on the core foundations of music. They have the opportunity to explore the elements of music, compose and create and develop instrumental skills. Students explore and develop essential skills in music and learn the key features and culture of music through the blues, popular song and carnival music for example.

Year 9

In their option year, Year 9 students embed their music skills in performance and composition further. Students get involved in our musical futures projects, guitar module and commercial music.

Years 10 and 11

In Years 10 and 11 we offer vocational music courses BTEC Level 2, which focus on skill sharing, delivering music events and developing performance skills on instruments of the students’ choice. Students also use their creative skills to write music and are able to use our music technology and bespoke computer software. Students explore a range of music, which certainly helps them to develop an appreciation for a wide variety of musical genres. These are very practical courses which give our students the opportunity to express themselves through creativity and performance.

Years 12 and 13

We currently offer the BTEC Level 3 Music Performance course. Students at this stage are committed and proficient musicians, often with aspirations to higher education and careers in music. We have a high success rate in students achieving Distinction or higher at this level, and many have gone on to study Music Performance or related courses at University and HE colleges.

Co-curricular and Instrumental Lessons

We offer a wide range of activities and events, including a wide range of instrumental and vocal lessons, trips, shows and community events throughout the year.
