The Modern Foreign Languagues Department consists of experienced teachers of French. Digital resources are used to enhance language learning and encourage independent work. Girls who speak another language are encouraged to take a GCSE examination in that language.

Pupils are encouraged to visit France either on family trips or with the school. Last year, an exchange with Phalempin in Northern France was set up.

WGS subscribes to Linguascope that provides interactive games to cover language skills at all levels. The website can be accessed from home and gives students the opportunity to learn other languages than French.

Key Stage 3

In Year 7, girls study French culture and language with the digital textbook Dynamo 1. They learn about greetings, school, free time, family life and town.

In Year 8, students carry on practising their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills with a variety of resources. Topics such as family, free time, going out, eating and drinking, trips and holidays and friends are covered in more depth.

In Year 9, students prepare the AQA FCSE examination. Our chosen topics are: relationships, family and friends, leisure and food and drink. Girls have their own access to Kerboodle – AQA GCSE French digital textbook.

Key Stage 4

There are currently two GCSE classes in Year 10; one is studying Spanish and the other French.
Students who choose French as an option have two years to prepare for their GCSE examination set by the AQA Exam Board. Kerboodle as well as a variety of resources are used in class to study three themes:

  • Identity and culture
  • Local, national, international and global areas of interest
  • Current and future study and employment
