We want to take this opportunity to share some exciting developments regarding homework at Walderslade Girls’ School that we believe will further enhance the learning experience of our students. As we continuously strive to improve our students’ education and engagement, we are introducing a new approach to homework that we are confident will inspire our student to excel academically. Starting this academic year, we are implementing a more structured and motivating homework system that involves both recognition and rewards.

Key changes for Homework assignments:

Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9):
Homework will be set on a two-week rotation by each department. This new approach will allow students to focus more on the quality of their work, rather than the quantity. We encourage parents to support their children in managing their time effectively to complete these assignments.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11):
Homework assignments for KS4 will be set at the discretion of their subject teachers. As you can imagine, homework may need to be weekly or termly based on the subject. This flexibility will allow teachers to tailor assignments to the specific needs and progress of each class.

What will homework look like?
Homework assignments may differ from subject to subject. Some subjects have the ability to use fantastic apps such as Sparx or Educake, whereas others will be quizzing students against their, very in-depth, knowledge organisers which will support students’ retention. If homework is set via an app, students will receive their log in details from their class teachers, ready for them to get started. Departments that rely on knowledge organisers will set a date for an in-class quiz. Students must use the knowledge organisers provided to support their revision. All knowledge organisers, for all subjects, can be found within the Parent Portal. Printed copies of knowledge organisers are also available from reception.

What is a Knowledge Organiser?
Knowledge Organisers provide students with an overview of what is taught throughout each term, explaining the key elements for each concept. Teachers will guide students to the particular topic, setting tasks and revision to complete, ready for an in-class quiz. Knowledge organisers support students with their revision skills, help them develop independence and resilience and, of course, help them with their learning.

Recognising Excellence:

We believe that acknowledging and celebrating the hard work and dedication of our students is crucial to their motivation and success. To that end, we are excited to introduce the “Star of the Week” initiative in each department. Teachers will select a student, from each year group, who has consistently demonstrated commitment and excellence in completing homework assignments. These students may be recognised with praise points, postcards home, positive parents contact and even on social media.

At the end of each half term, all “Star of the Week” recipients from across the school will be entered into a raffle, offering them a chance to win exciting prizes as a token of our appreciation for their outstanding efforts.

We are confident that these changes will not only encourage a stronger work ethic but also foster a sense of achievement and pride among our students. We encourage you to engage with your child about their classwork and homework assignments, supporting them in their learning journey.
