Overview Of English At Chantry Community Academy
Most of our writing comes from the Power of Reading programme. This programme is where children engage with high quality texts over the course of a term. The teacher will read their chosen book with the class and then the children have the opportunity to explore the text in interesting and exciting ways. With Power of Reading, children are encouraged to explore narratives through writing, roleplay and art as well as collecting ideas, vocabulary and skills to produce high quality writing each week.
As well as the Power of reading, the children are learning grammar through the No-Nonsense Grammar scheme. This is a new scheme that thoroughly teaches grammar as expected in the new curriculum and can either be taught alongside the power of reading or can be taught separately with resources and activities for the children to enjoy.
Over the last 18 months, Chantry Community Academy has been part of the successful ‘Buster’s Book Club’. This is a countywide initiative where children aim to collect reading minutes to help break a record of one million minutes of reading being recorded. The children are encouraged to read for a target amount on a Wednesday night and then record any minutes over that amount. The minutes are then collected and recorded on a Kent database where they are added up and the children then have a possibility of winning prizes.
To help children with their spellings, after they have finished Read Write Inc. we use the Read Write Inc. follow up programme, The Spelling Zone. This is an interactive programme where the children follow the instructions of some fun aliens who help them to learn new spelling patterns and word families through a series of activities that help embed the basics of how the English language is made up.
